Start Using Vitamin C Serum Now!

Vitamin C Serum, it's all the rage right now. Here's a little info on what's so great about it and why you should start incorporating it in your morning routine.

What exactly does it do?

Well, first it's full of antioxidants that protect the skin from environmental pollutants. It also stimulate collagen (which helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles) and help even out your skin-tone by reducing any skin discoloration. Think bright beautiful skin, basically!

What is important to know about Vitamin C serum?

Because of its acidity Vitamin C serum can feel like it's burning, especially to those who are new to using it or have sensitive skin. In order to be really effective your serum should contain 15-20% L-ascorbic acid; however, that can be quite irritating to a newbie's skin so when first introducing a Vitamin C serum I recommend finding one around 5% to give your skin time to adjust. (I have linked the Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop which I ordered through Amazon--it's a great 'beginner' serum.) Don't be afraid to invest in a lower 'dosage' thinking it's a waste...it's not! We will discuss your Vitamin C serum expiring shortly and the importance of replenishing when it does. Once you go through your first bottle you can step up your game.

When should I use it?

Thanks to its antioxidant properties it's best to use your Vitamin C serum in the morning. Apply it after your cleanser and before your moisturizer. Don't rush the moisturizer, let your serum really absorb.

There are so many on the market, what ingredients should I look for?

Look for products which contain pure L-ascorbic acid ranging from 5% to 20% depending on your history of using it or your skins sensitivity to acidic products. Also, if you feel like it's a bit to harsh for you you can mix 1-2 drops with another serum and go from there.

Things to be careful of when using Vitamin C Serum?

  • Derma-rolling: I suggest using your Vitamin C serum with caution when you're darma-rolling. Derma-rolling can leave your skin feeling tender or sensitive and this product's acidity can aggravate that so skip this serum the day you micro-needle.

  • Other 'acids': Because of its acidity it's best to not use this serum at the same time as other highly acidic serums. For example, apply this is the morning and save your retinol, glycolic, or salicylic for the evening.

  • Also, know that your Vitamin C serum does expire because pure ascorbic acid will oxidize no matter what. As it oxidizes it'll change from a clear color to an amber one. Once this happens your product is no longer effective. In fact, it actually becomes harmful to your skin once it expires. I personally store my serum in the box so that it's never in direct light. Fluctuations in temperature can greatly impact its potency and therefore the effectiveness. Basically, keep it in a cool, dry place and switch it out once it starts to turn.
